TYPES OF ROOF DAMAGE

HAILSTORMS

You’ve seen the damage that a hailstorm can do to a car. But did you know that hail can damage your roof, too? Although hail damage on a roof may look harmless on the surface, the consequences can be severe. Knowing how to detect hail damage and what to do about it can help you prevent water damage and avoid costly repairs. Hail can do plenty of damage to your roof without punching a hole through it. That’s what makes hail damage so deceiving. Unless you look for it, you may never know it is there until it’s too late.

There are two signature marks of hail damage when it comes to your roof. First, look in your gutters for mineral granules. If you find granules in your gutters, that means something has forced them off your shingles. If you’ve had a recent hailstorm, that something could be hail, and you need to get a specialist take a closer look at your shingles.

Facts + Statistics: Hail

Hail -related insured losses between 2000 and 2019 averaged between $8 billion to $14 billion a year, according to Aon.

There were 3,763 major hailstorms in 2021, according to the NOAA’s Severe Storms database.

HURRICANES

Hurricane-force winds, which are classified by meteorologists as 74 mph or greater, or gale-force winds, which are between 39-54 mph, can cause visible damage to your home’s roof. High winds can remove or tear shingles, leaving the underlayment, roof deck, or waterproofing material exposed to the elements.

During less severe storms, sudden, sharp gusts of wind can lift and curl shingles. When shingles are installed, they’re purposefully overlapped to create a water-tight seal, and this lifting and curling can break this seal, potentially leaving your roof vulnerable to damage from wind-driven rain.

DISCONTINUED SHINGLES

It’s not always the damage itself that can determine whether a claim is approved or not. Most insurance policies cover the use of “like kind” materials.

If the shingles on your roof have been discontinued and are no longer available, the insurance company will have to replace all the shingles on your roof even if only one shingle was missing. If the insurance company can’t replace that one shingle with “like kind” material, the only way to resolve the damage is to replace the whole roof, and they’ll likely approve the claim.

That appeal on a claim is valid with most insurance companies, but most people have no way of knowing if their shingles have been discontinued or not.
